Struggled through storms, and other disasters, North America dissolved, and the country of Panem rose up in its place. The area where the story first takes place is called the Seam, and it’s part of District 12. Katniss, who is sixteen, lives there with her family. An event gone by the ‘Hunger Games,’ takes place every year for all thirteen districts where the gathering, which is televised, takes place in their district. People between the ages 12 and 18 are picked to fight for their lives and kill till the last one is standing. This was made to punish the districts and remind them of their powerlessness. The winning tribute and his/her home district is then rewarded with food, supplies, and riches. Haymitch Abernathy, was the only one of two people from District 12 to win the Hunger Games. He was there to help whoever is picked for the hunger games.

Age twelve is when people start being entered, but there name only goes in once. Katniss’s sister, Prim, is only 12 and when the drawing had begun, She was the first one chosen. As she walks up to the stage, Katniss panicked and shouted out ‘I volunteer as tribute.’ Which meant she was going to take her sisters place in the arena. The boy tribute that was picked was Peeta Mellark. Awhile back, when Katniss was struggling to find food for her family, He helped her out. She realized she would have to work with him so they could survive. She was held with hunting skills that her father taught her to keep herself and her family alive.

Chapters 10-12

Before the games started, Katniss and Peeta said their goodbyes to Haymitch. He gave them one last advice, he said, ‘To run away as soon as the gong sound goes off when the game officially begins. During the Games, a cannon sound goes off every time a tribute dies. Eventually when it got dark, Katniss heard eleven cannon shots. That meant thirteen tributes remain alive in the game. Peeta changes a lot by being in the arena. At first he seemed to be kind and gentle, but he grew into another side of him. Deep down inside he learned that he was capable of being savage if he needed to be. Which meant killing someone for his own sake or for Katniss.

In the arena, Katniss develops a relationship with Rue, a young girl from District 11, and is emotionally devastated when Rue is killed because she reminds her of her sister. Katniss, then made up a memorial for Rue by placing flowers over her body as an act of rebellion toward the Capitol. Close to the end of the Games, the remaining tributes were alerted to a rule change that allows both tributes from the same district to be declared victors if they are the last two standing. After that change in the rules was brought to their attention, Katniss and Peeta begin to work as a team. When all of the other tributes were killed and they appear to win the Games together, the rule of two victors was revoked. Katniss and Peeta decided to both commit a double suicide attempt to eat poisonous berries known to be nightlock, hoping that the capitol would change their minds and that they will both remain victors.
